Quitting Time

October 11, 2012

When you live with diabetes, you live with the knowledge that many of your other organs are more likely to quit on you.  These things I know.  I’ve learned to pay attention to my eyes, kidney, heart and limbs.  I’m feeling like a different organ is starting to quit on me.  It’s my skin.  When I was a kid I had to stop using my arms because of scar tissue.  And now with the Dexcom and pump sites I’m feeling like my skin real estate is shrinking.  I know that I “can” use my arms for the Dex site, but my experience has been that doesn’t work as well.  Maybe I’ll try again with cooler weather here.  If you use arm sites, what has your experience been in colder weather?  Keep in mind that I am a snow lover, skier & all around big comfy-sweaters kind of lady.  I’ve always been a fan of leg shots & sites, but I think I need to give them a break.  They’ve been working overtime and I need to find new options.  My current site is in my butt, which is a little odd at times, but seems to be working.  My previous site was closer to my hip and felt awkward in the car and when I was reading.  I read in bed, on my side.  If anyone has any other suggestions/options PLEASE let me know.  I plan on more than doubling my years with diabetes and I’ve never thought of going off of my pump, so suggestions are greatly needed!

Katie hates leg shots and won’t try the butt. We’ve only had diabetes for 6 months and her poor tummy is worn out. I worry about this problem too.

I’ve been dealing with a bit more site itchiness myself lately. It’s the same infusion set, same CGM adhesive, same IV3000 that I’ve been using for awhile, But lately it seems to irritate me as soon as I put it on, and I struggle to tolerate it.

Come to think of it, I believe it’s time to check the water softener in the basement. We’ve got “hard” water where I live, and the softener (which uses salt to pull out the mineral deposits, or something like that) could really make a difference. I know you’re living with a new family now; could it be the water there?

As for infusion sites, I’ve been using the Sure-T in my lower back lately. Sounds strange I know, but it seems to work. Much better than the abdomen which gets scrunched up every time I lean over. For CGM, I’m using my arms. I’m sure I’ll use my back and arms constantly til I wear them out, then it’ll be time to find other parts of my body to use.

I get the winter itch too and I don’t really have a solution. Too much lotion just makes nothing stick.

What part of CGM on the arm is not working for you? Not accurate, not comfortable? I prefer CGM on the arm and pump sites anywhere else. Second place CGM site is side of my thigh – but pump sites DO NOT work there for me.

I'd love to hear what you think about my blog thoughts!
