Cell Phone Underwater

June 25, 2012

Are you in the northeast?  Did you experience that heat wave last week?  Well off we went to the pool.  Since Boy Genius is older, I am more confident in his swimming abilities, and he is often away from Girl Genius and I diving for rings or torpedos or whales or whatever else there is available that day.  I tend to try and show Girl Genius synchronized swimming moves without bumping her or other people.  At one point the three of us were all close together and Boy Genius came up a few times saying “I hear a cell phone under water!”  Girl Genius and I gave him a crazy look because it’s just that, crazy.  Until he imitated the sound and he said “beep beep beep beep beep” with each beep getting higher and in that moment of clarity I realized that he was hearing my insulin pump.  It was on my hip in my bathing suit and I was getting the low reservoir warning.  I told them it was my pump and cleared the warning and we all went back to swimming as though nothing had happened.

Yes, I do live in the northeast, but this happened about a month ago vacationing in the southwest. I was so excited to try out my new Aquapac (which has a well known off-label use for keeping Minimed pumps dry underwater) that I left my brand-new cell phone in my bathing suit pocket also. The pump survived, the phone did not.

I'd love to hear what you think about my blog thoughts!
