DSMA: Support Ladies

April 20, 2012

Today I’m taking a break from the HAWMC prompts and participating in the DSMA Blog Carnival.  I haven’t participated in quite a while, and I think this is the perfect topic to bring me back.

Describe your ideal diabetes “support group”? What would you discuss?

This is the thing.  Last year another woman in Boston who was recently diagnosed asked “all-knowing” me if there was any place to go to meet other PWDs.  I didn’t know of any groups, but I did know of a few other young women in the area.  I sent out an email and we started meeting.  It seems like we’ve met almost every month since then and the group just keeps growing and growing.  So far it has just been ladies, but I know there are some men in the area who have taken an interest in getting together as well, so we’re expanding soon.  We have gotten together for cupcakes, coffee, brinner, falafel, wine & next up: margaritas.  They even celebrated my 10 year pump anniversary with me.  We have talked about everything from real life to type 1 to type 1.5 to probably type 2 (although we haven’t had any type 2’s join our group yet).  We talk about doctors and endos and nurses and what we expect from them.  We give experiences and recommendations and talk about our expectations.  We talk about when we were diagnosed and how old we were.  We talk about why we like the pump we have and where we wear it. (Try saying that 5x fast…I could barely type it.)  We talk about being single, to dating, to weddings to planning a baby.  A lot of times we talk about when we’ll see each other again.  We laugh and we tell stories and I can’t wait to hear from these ladies again.  This group is constantly changing and growing and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  This has become a better support group than I ever imagined it could be. The only thing that would make it ideal is if everyone could come every time we meet.  I am very blessed and I count my blessings every day that diabetes has brought these wonderful ladies into my life.

This post is my April entry in the DSMA Blog Carnival.  If you’d like to participate too, you can get all of the information at http://diabetessocmed.com/2012/april-dsma-blog-carnival-2/

This sounds a lot like how my local group works/formed, too! I love meeting with those ladies. We even talked about throwing a “welcome to the world” pump shower for one of them who plans to get a hard-fough pump later this year. 🙂

I am very curious to find out how a PWD living in Boston can become a part of this wonderful ladies group, this sounds right up my alley!
