HAWMC: There ARE Unicorns

April 11, 2012

Theme song. Imagine your health focus or blog is getting its own theme song. What would the lyrics be? What type of music would it be played to?

At this point in my life I can tell you with certainty that whatever my theme song is, would be played to country music.  If you asked me when I was diagnosed, it would have been classical music, or, pretty music as I liked to call it.

When my mother asked me why I wanted to all of a sudden go from shots to a pump, she asked me to explain.  Real words didn’t come to me, but a poem did.  I wish I could find it or remember it word-for-word.  I do remember that I titled it Normal.  It was about the inability to be spontaneous based on the soul fact that I had to eat.  And how a pump would change that.  That was the theme song to my diabetes at that time.  (I was 16 years old).

Right now, my theme song would have to do with two things.  Friends and Insurance.  I know, I know.  How could you possibly write a song about those together.  But see, I want to people to know that this disease does have glitter and unicorns if you look hard enough, and I looked through my computer screen and found them.  It would be my happy theme song.  My sad theme song would be about insurance not covering all the things I want it to (cough Dexcom cough).  I know that I’m managing now, but I’d love to feel more secure in that managment.  This song would have anger & sadness & finish with hope.  It would be filled with emotions, just like me.
