“Diseases can be our spiritual flat tires – disruptions in our lives that seem to be disasters at the time but end by redirecting our lives in a meaningful way.” – Bernie S. Siegel
I don’t remember what I thought about diabetes when I was first diagnosed; I was just too young. I know that there have been times when I’ve been really mad at diabetes though. I even remember throwing my meter across the kitchen as a child. I didn’t know people with diabetes and I was “the only one!” I know this is not true, but it felt like it. I mean, sometimes it just sucks. And then I went to support groups and camp and camp some more. I met my best friend at camp when were still single-digit ages. How can I be mad at a disease that brought the greatest person into my life. We don’t live in the same place, but we’re close enough that phone calls can be made “I need to see you” and it happens. I was given ten fabulous years of camp in NH and then two more in Oregon. I never would have gone to OR if it hadn’t been for diabetes. How can I be mad? Oregon was an enlightening experience for me and I am thankful to have had it in my life. I met more wonderful friends out west and they continue to be an integral part of my life. And now in this age of technology I have my wonderful online community that has brought me more friends. We came together because we have diabetes. We became friends because of our love of other things: sprinkles, cupcakes, unicorns, cheese, heels, cute children, music, food and the list goes on. Yes, diabetes sucks. Yes, I wish it would give me a break. But how can I be mad when I’ve lost count at how many wonderful people it has brought into my life?
