My Beep
When the kids don’t have school (not talking about weekends when I’m not working), all sorts of diabetes schedules go out the window. It’s not that I don’t pay attention, it’s just that the day is different since there is no schedule, so diabetes must be different too. It also means that the kids sleep in and that I may in fact have to use my pump in front of Mom and/or Dad Genius. It’s not that I don’t like to, it’s just that I don’t have to very often. In the work house, it seems there is always something beeping: 2 coffee pots, microwave, oven, multitudes of cell phones, and the list goes on. As Girl Genius, Mom Genius and I were eating breakfast, I bolused for my cereal with a startled Mom Genius looking up. “Oh, it’s you. I don’t recognize your beep.” To me, I can’t imagine not recognizing it, but it does make me happy that there are people out there who are knowledgeable but also not tuned in to the sounds of technological diabetes.
Aside from how much I identify with this post (“my beep” is my pump, versus my coworkers’ various phone beeping noises that I associate with them), now I can’t get out of my head the idea that the DOC should re-make Usher’s “My Boo” with “My Beep.” Who’s in??
I went out to dinner Friday night with a friend, and for the first time EVER completely ran out of insulin. On the MiniMed pump, when you run out of insulin it beeps and reminds you and beeps and reminds you in a never-ending cycle. Thankfully the restaurant was loud so she couldn’t hear anything (my DexCom was also alarming!) but the 15 minute ride home was quite the beep fest.
